Is College Worth It?
Here are some statistics to think about. Some of the research goes back several years, but more recent information gives us additional ways to evaluate the question today.
In fact, according to a 2011 book Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses by Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa, “45 percent of students ‘did not demonstrate any significant improvement in learning’ through the first two years of college.” Comparing that statistic to another statistic in the same book, the proportion of students tracked over the full four years, dropped to 36 percent who still did not show significant improvement at the end of the full 4 years. As a result, parents are beginning to ask, “What are we paying for? Is college worth it?”
These were 2011 statistics; however, the federal government realized the issue and shifted the accountability from cognitive testing to measurable economic output (as of mid-2026). The federal shift put rules into place that require colleges to prove that the median earnings of their graduates exceed the earnings of a typical high school graduate. If a college fails the economic metrics for consecutive years, they could lose access to federal Direct Loans starting in the 2028-2029 academic year.
The statistics and the analysis methods used for the 2011 book have been debated by statisticians. The research for the book used the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+). It is a scoring that is still used today but with vastly different results. So the debate goes on. But because we found these statistics too hard to swallow, we tackled the issue and have created a K-12th solution. At this point the solution is being developed for K-12 and will grow into adding adult education courses.

According to the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), that tracks thousands of students each year, showed full-time college students spend an average of 14 hours per week prepping (studying, reading, writing, and homework and/or lab work). And roughly just 4 percent of freshman students admit to spending 5 hours or less per week on their studies. How does that compare to the other activities like shopping, partying, and other activities? In fact, students spend an average of 20-23 hours per week in other activities (11-13 hours partying/socializing; 7 hours drinking and eating; 2-3 hours shopping and running errands) According to data from NSSE and Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time Use Survey (ATUS). It also mentions that 30 percent of the students in the partying/socializing category admit to spending 16 or more hours weekly in this activity.
Adult illiteracy is a growing problem. Cognitive Tasks score average for Undergraduate Degree Holders. Data from the American Institute for Research (AIR) shows Undergraduates struggle with calculating compound prices at grocery stores, budgeting monthly expenses, managing credit and interest, and basic fuel forecasting.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) compiles data comparing adult competencies globally. That data reveals that when compared to the college graduates from other developed countries, United States College Grads score average in literacy and below average in numeracy (math skills).

Some research indicates that academic rigor has changed over time. And who suffers when coursework becomes less challenging? The student, because they are not challenged to understand difficult concepts which encourage them to think beyond the surface of the subject.
Historical data and educational studies indicate that College Classes are growing easier–less challenging–in workload, rigor, grading, and other areas. The most measurable proof is the drastic upward trend of Grade Point Averages (GPAs). Between 1990 and 2020, the average GPA rose 16 percent. “A’s and “A-‘s” are the new C! Let me explain. Where C used to be the average Grade in college, it is now A or A- which has been attributed to lenient grading.
