In this ever-changing world that is relying heavily on innovation and imagination, the uses for crypto are boundless. However, in this article, we’ll limit our exploration to the realities. Still in its infancy, crypto has experienced considerable advances and the cryptocurrency market is seeing considerable activity. Cryptocurrency markets are known for volatility and rapid price fluctuations. But in the midst of all this activity, interest has shifted to these projects and altcoins:
- Developers are experimenting with ways to combine community-driven token models, like meme coins, with artificial intelligence tools to expand blockchain functionality.
- New blockchain initiatives often generate online interest among communities exploring innovative technologies, especially during the early development phases.
- Some Layer-2 solutions are being designed to improve scalability by connecting established blockchain networks such as Solana and Ethereum.
The growth and changes in this area have created numerous Altcoins. What are those? Basically Altcoins, short for alternative coins, are any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin (and some put Ethereum in with Bitcoin). Altcoins were created to address the limitations of Bitcoin and they are categorized by their purpose or function. Some of these groupings by function or purpose are:
- Stablecoins: Grouped with stable assets like the US dollar
- Utility Tokens: The tokens are used for accessing blockchain network services.
- Security Tokens: These represent ownership in real-world assets like stocks or real estate.
- Meme Coins: These often begin as internet-driven community projects supported by online engagement.
- Governance Tokens: The tokens allow the holder to vote on decisions within decentralized projects.
- Privacy Coins: The purpose is use for anonymous transactions.
- Layer-1 Coins: These are native to their own blockchains and are used for transactions. This is the category that includes the Layer-2 Altcoin.
Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency and is still the most dominant.
But it has limitations, such as slow transaction speeds and extremely high fees. The issues give rise to opportunities for solutions provided by the Altcoins:
- Faster and cheaper transactions
- Smart contracts
- Enhanced privacy
- Improved scalability
So much is happening in the area of Crypto and Blockchain. But as we move forward, we find scammers as well, focused mostly on blockchain and altcoins.
There is proof of Fake Initial Coin Offerings and Fake Wallets and Exchanges. So here is some additional information we found is worth sharing. With the rise of this recreation, security measures are working to catch up with the scammers and a variety of schemes. These can run the gambit from banking and money transfers (and their solutions) to the financial activities.
But decentralization is the fundamental aspect of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. It is occurring now and is anticipated to expand across several sections. This possibility of expansion is spurring many people to explore crypto technology largely because of its evolving use cases and innovative potential.
With the promise of sovereignty over a variety of processes, investors have lost billions of dollars to schemes like Ponzi schemes and cryptocurrency hacks. In December of 2022, a major news source (CNBC TV18) reported that a study estimated that “Around 80 percent of global investors are likely to have lost money on their cryptocurrency investments.” This statement was from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) study (73-81 percent of global crypto investors) from about a month prior to the cited news source. Some other losses cited by BIS in Bulletin 69:
- “As valuations tumbled, over $1.8 trillion of crypto value dissolved.”
- “Over $450 billion vanished during the market turmoil following the Terra/Luna collapse in May 2022 alone”
- “another $200 billion was lost in the wake of the FTX bankruptcy in November 2022.”
Even though this data is from 2021 to 2022 and security technology has advanced, it should still remind us that this is a volatile arena demanding research and caution before investing. Fortunately, it appears there is a downturn in losses due to the improvement of security protocols industry-wide.
Yet even with the downturn of losses, investors are still losing not only dollars but Bitcoin as well. How can an investor ensure the legitimacy of a crypto project?
- Due Diligence: Research any cryptocurrency project before investing. Be cautious of projects with anonymous teams, promises of guaranteed high returns, or pressure to invest quickly.
- Verify Authenticity: Use official websites and trusted sources to access exchanges and wallet services. Be wary of unsolicited communications and always verify the legitimacy of any platform before transacting.
- Stay Informed: Regularly consult resources to stay updated on reported scams and fraudulent activities.
Many of us own some Bitcoin. Tech enthusiasts are exploring ways computers and networks interact with crypto technologies. But these methods involve technical complexity and are not guaranteed paths to income. This is an avenue that is still unknown and definitely unutilized. We are constantly gaining knowledge to share. So if you want to learn before deciding to invest, you might want to check out the information we have on wallets, wallet types, and security measures. But do your own research as well since technology advances rapidly. Please note that this is for education and information only and is not meant to make any financial claims or provide investment advice.
Cryptocurrency technologies are still evolving and involve risk. Individuals who explore this space should approach it with education, caution, and realistic expectations. My intent is to provide general information about crypto use cases and security awareness, not financial or investment advice.
